Chapter One.
Eli Goldsworthy trudged through the empty halls of Degrassi High with a slight limp, his hands stuffed in the pockets of his leather jacket. He was skipping second period, but he didn’t care anymore. He hadn’t smiled in months. Ever since the accident in his beloved hurse, Marty, Eli had never been the same. Claire had ripped his heart strait out of his chest and threw it through the gates of hell and since then it had been lost forever.
The hallway was haunted with memories. It almost stung every time he wandered the halls alone. Adam, his former best friend, had seemed to abandon him along with everyone else. Or maybe it was his fault. Maybe he had grown distant from his friends… no, it was their fault, not his. Everything was their fault.
“Eli Goldsworthy, please come to the main office immediately.” The sound of Mr. Simpson’s voice sounded over the speaker.
A sigh escaped Eli’s lips as he turned around and headed back the way he had been walking. With his head down, he pushed his bangs out of his face and walked at a faster pace with a scowl present on his face. “What the hell did I do now…” he muttered under his breath, lifting his head up a bit to go down some stairs. As he strode carelessly down the stairs, he seen a girl standing at the bottom step, staring with a clueless expression at a piece of paper. The girl had slightly long black hair with layers all the way through. Her bangs with cut messily just above her black-outlined eyes, which Eli noticed were a strange amber brown color. Her skin was pale, even paler than his. Next, Eli noticed her several piercings, two on her lips which he knew were called snake bites, and a nose piercing through her septum. A slight smirk crossed over his lips, as the nose piercing she had reminded him of a bull ring.
“Would you like some help?” Eli blurted out, causing the girl to jump in surprise. She looked up from the paper and shrugged a bit, slightly embarrassed that this boy had made her jump. “Uhm… sure.” She replied, smiling as she handed him the paper in her hand. “I can’t find for the life of me find room 206.”
Eli scanned the paper, looking through all of her classes she had throughout the day. They had most of them together. “English… It’s upstairs, down the hall to the left. The first door. You have that class with me.” Before handing the girl back her schedule, he took note of her name. Annabelle J. Price.
“Thanks.” Anna said with a smile, taking back her schedule and stuffing it into her purple and black bag she had resting at her feet. “By the way, my name is Anna. I’m guessing you’re Eli Goldsworthy.”
“Uh… yeah, how’d you know that?” Eli replied, a slightly shocked look taking over his blank expression. Crossing his arms, he ignored the slight squeak of his leather jacket, and instead focused on Anna’s laughter. He kind of liked it. Its sweet tone gave her justice. “Simpson told me to keep an eye out for you. What’d you do to get sent to the office?”
Eli gazed down, focusing on Anna’s worn grey converse as he contemplated his answer. How would he tell this girl he had been skipping second period English class because of his ex-girlfriend? “I’ve been skipping class a lot…” he muttered under his breath, glancing back up to Anna. Eli was slightly disappointed when, as he expected, Anna asked: “Why?”
“An ex-girlfriend…” Eli responded to her question quietly, closing his eyes. Almost immediately after closing his eyes, Eli felt a warm embrace. Opening his eyes, he could see Annabelle hugging him. The intoxicating scent of strawberries filled his nostrils as he took a deep breath and asked “What are you doing?”
“You looked like you needed a hug… I may not seem like it, but I’m a nice person. I try my best to cheer people up when they’re feeling down.” Anna smiled, pulling away from the hug and crossing her arms.
“Uh, thanks…” Eli didn’t know what else to say… It felt good to have a hug, to feel as though someone cared. Anna shrugged and picked up her bag. Before she could say anything, Eli smirked. “You’re really short.”
Anna in fact, was several inches shorter than Eli, being only 5’3”. “Hey!” she said angrily, scowling at Eli before giving him a satisfied smile. “I’m not short, I’m fun size.” Eli watched as Anna made her way up the stairs, slightly adjusting her red and black plaid skirt to her comfort. “I’ll see you in class Eli!”
Smiling a bit, Eli nodded and waved goodbye to his new friend. Maybe Degrassi wouldn’t be so bad after all.
